This trilingual film highlights the enduring significance of Irish famine memory in Qu\u00e9bec. It is an hommage<\/em> to Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois-Irish historian, Georges Kavanagh, whose Irish-speaking ancestors survived the wreck of the Carricks <\/em>in the Gulf of St-Lawrence in May 1847. Filmed in the Gasp\u00e9 in northeastern Qu\u00e9bec and in Sligo, Ireland, the film allows Kavanagh to tell his own story, as it follows him to the landmarks and seamarks of the tragedy and on his journey home to find his ancestral village in Ireland. The documentary will be followed by a discussion on the making of the film and the various research techniques used.<\/p>\n

Biography:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Professor Gear\u00f3id \u00d3 hAllmhur\u00e1in is an award-winning musician, ethnomusicologist, filmmaker and cultural historian. Director of the School of Irish Studies at Concordia University Montreal, he held the Jefferson Smurfit Chair of Irish Studies and was Professor of Music at the University of Missouri-St. Louis from 2000-2009. He was the inaugural holder of the bilingual Johnson Chair in Qu\u00e9bec and Canadian Irish Studies at Concordia from 2009-2021. His recordings include Traditional Music from Clare and Beyond<\/em> (1996), Tracin’<\/em> (1999), and The Independence Suite<\/em> (2004). His Short History of Irish Traditional Music<\/em> published by O\u2019Brien Press has been a best seller since 1998. His monograph Flowing Tides: History and Memory in an Irish Soundscape<\/em>, a study of traditional soundscapes in the West of Ireland, was published by Oxford University Press in 2016. His recent work includes a collaboration with Canadian composer, Se\u00e1n Ferguson for his suite Fata\u00ed B\u00e1na, Carraig Dubh<\/em>, composed for uilleann pipes and live electronics, and a bilingual film Lost Children of the Carricks,<\/em> written and directed by \u00d3 hAllmhur\u00e1in, which was selected to represent Ireland at the Ethnografilm<\/em> Festival<\/em> in Paris in 2022.<\/p>\n

Musicien irlandais, cin\u00e9aste, ethnomusicologue et historien, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 titulaire de la Chaire Jefferson Smurfit en \u00e9tudes irlandaises et professeur de musique \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 du Missouri-St. Louis (2000-2009), et le premier titulaire de la Chaire Johnson\u00a0en\u00a0\u00e9tudes\u00a0canado-irlandaises\u00a0au\u00a0Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Concordia (2009-2021).
