Learning about learners: statistical modelling of CEFR graded texts from students learning English
This presentation focuses on assessing language proficiency levels according to linguistic complexity in learner English. I will introduce a statistical model to investigate and predict a learner’s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level. We will see how to find criterial features in writings by learners of English as a foreign language. We utilise microsystems features which are related to learner-specific linguistic systems in which several forms operate paradigmatically.
Andrew Simpkin is a Professor of Statistics at the University of Galway on the west coast of Ireland. After completing a PhD in Statistics in Galway (2011), he spent several years as a postdoc and research fellow at Bristol Medical School and the Integrative Epidemiology Unit in Bristol, and the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. He returned to the University of Galway as a Lecturer in Statistics in 2018. Andrew has developed methods for modelling high-dimensional data using functional data analysis, and models for epigenetic change in genomics. He holds honorary positions at Massey University, the University of Queensland, and the University of Bristol. He currently leads a team of four postdocs and three PhD students working across grants in epigenetics, digital health innovations and sensor data analytics.
